We all wonder what else is out there from time to time. But we know that getting a realistic and thorough snapshot of the job market is hard work. Recruiters don’t always have your best interests at heart, job boards tell you little about what a company or job is really like and you can’t always turn to work colleagues and tell them you’re thinking of applying for other jobs. Interviewing takes a large amount of time and energy and most of us live such busy lives that this is not an option unless we are desperately unhappy at work.
But how do you know if you are really unhappy or just stuck in a rut?
There’s one question to keep asking yourself on a regular basis, and that question is:
“Would I apply today for the job I currently have?”
Imagine you were at a different company you loved and a recruiter called you up to offer you your current job, would you follow it up? Would you call them back? How excited would you feel?
It’s a really simple question but gets to the core of whether you’re just comfortable, doing something familiar or really pursuing something meaningful and motivating. The reality is, there’s nothing wrong with staying at the same company for a while, and there is such thing as being overly ambitious. Just don’t play the game many do with themselves or other companies about “maybe I want to leave, maybe I don’t”. In our experience you’ll just end up wasting your own time as well as burning bridges with companies that you may one day want to join. So ask this question, get to the heart of what’s really going on and, if appropriate, take action.
If you wouldn’t apply for your current job then I believe you owe it to yourself to find something that you can be excited about. As stated in our manifesto, life’s not a rehearsal!
